Hak Ja Han Moon — The Mother of Peace

A life dedicated to peace

Dr. Hak Ja Han was born in 1943 in Anju, in what is now North Korea. Co-founder of the Universal Peace Federation, she has devoted her life to realising a world of unity, compassion and family values rooted in universal principles. Her story is one of resilience, devotion and visionary leadership.

With her late husband, the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, she established the Marriage Blessing movement, bringing couples together across the barriers of race, religion and nation as “one family under God”.

As founder of the Women’s Federation for World Peace, she has championed the central role of women in building a peaceful society. She has founded and supported numerous peace organisations — among them the Universal Peace Federation, the Sunhak Peace Prize and the Rally of Hope series — creating a network of leaders for peace worldwide.

Through decades of public service she has inspired millions to live for the sake of others and to pursue reconciliation beyond ideological boundaries. Her memoir, Mother of Peace, has been translated into more than a dozen languages.

How we got here

The path the Mother of Peace has walked so far — from her arrest to the verdict still ahead.

September 2025

Arrested and detained in Seoul

Dr. Hak Ja Han, then 83, was arrested and held at the Seoul Detention Centre following a special counsel investigation into alleged political funding. Three weeks earlier she had publicly denied giving any such instruction.

October 2025

Formally indicted

Prosecutors indicted her over alleged political donations to a then-governing-party politician in 2022, and related solicitation. She has denied wrongdoing throughout.

February – April 2026

Detention suspended, and resumed

The court granted temporary suspensions of her detention on humanitarian grounds, given her age and health. Between them she returned to custody.

March 2026

She writes from the detention centre

From custody she sent a message to members abroad. It contained no complaint about her own situation — only encouragement. Read it →

10 July 2026

The final hearing — and her statement

At the closing hearing at Seoul Central District Court, prosecutors requested a total of 13 years’ imprisonment. Given the chance to speak, she said she had never sought power through money, apologised for the controversy, and spoke of her hope for peace. Read her statement →

Published in 2020, Mother of Peace is Dr. Hak Ja Han's autobiography — a sweeping account of a life lived in pursuit of a single vision: a world free from conflict, united by shared values of love and family.

The book traces her journey from a divided Korea to the world stage, documenting her work alongside her husband Reverend Sun Myung Moon to build a global movement for peace, her encounters with world leaders, and her theology of the "Heavenly Parent" — a God of both masculine and feminine aspects.

Translated into over a dozen languages and read across six continents, it stands as the most complete account of her life's mission. Her arrest came just five years after its publication — making it impossible to separate her words on the page from the legal assault she now faces.
